The bigger a light source appears relative to the subject, the less defined (softer) the edges of the shadows are.Soft lighting?soft lighting and correct exposure...thats it
A small light source, like the built-in, pop up flash or a hot shoe mounted flash, makes edge shadows that are very sharp and harsh.
Some of the light modifiers used to make a light apparently larger are umbrellas, diffusion panels, softboxes, beauty dishes, etc.
