How do you get an IR remote to work?

Never touched an IR remote before, and one came with my D70s (the ML-L3). How do I get it to control the shutter?

Not sure about that one specifically, but you usually just have to switch the drive mode to timer/remote, maybe flip a switch on the remote (my remote has a 3 position switch - off, shutter, and delayed shutter), and push the button.
