Hi and welcome. The biggest problem with these photos is that they are taken with the flash on your camera. This causes harsh shadows and is usually unappealing. Use a lightsource that is away from the camera and larger like a window that faces open sky (no sun) or a lamp behind a white sheet.

Agreed. Cute kid though.

Would an external flash that is attached to the top of the camera be better?

Or take the photo without flash.. perhaps in a brighter room or outdoor. Nice kid!

Yeah, the flash pretty much spoils it. And ss far as I remember it's not advisable to use it directly on kids this young, you might think about that.

Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooooood that baby is soooooo cuuuuuuute :D! You shouldn't have used flash though.

I read the same thing that Drank mentions--the light from the flash can be damaging to their eyes. Cute kid.

You have the right idea, but it's way too flashed out. How about moving the adorable baby near a window and shooting natural light?

That is an urban legend, that is total BS.

The flash doesn't spoil the shot. The quality if the light the flash produced is what spoils the shot. Flash works very well, but usually needs to be modified in any of various ways.

Visit http://neilvn.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/ for some pointers on how to use on the camera flash.

That baby OUGHT to be in pictures. With softer lighting though.

KmH, I'm as skeptical a guy as you will meet, but when I read the manual for my Speedlight (yes, I RTFM), on the bottom of page ii it reads: (scan, see item 9)

Cute kid, decent poses, but the black fabric is just a downer...a brighter fabric would have looked much better. You would get better photos with a nice bounce flash with something like a Lumiquest bouncer on a moderately powerful accessory shoe-mount flash unit, shot in a smallish room.

There you go. It's in print somewhere....so there is zero doubt that it's true.

Hey! If you can't trust the FM, what can you trust?

:er:

Not sure why you would have a flash that close to a baby anyway.
