I have a flash and a Hoya filter.

The Flash is made by a company called TeleSor, model is Electronic Flash 172, requires 2 AA batteries. Any idea on how good this thing is.

The Hoya filter I have, has this on the ring:

HOYA 52mm UV(0) JAPAN

I don't know how old it is, it's kinda lite weight and a bit thick, any idea how old this filter is and what quality it is?

Both items came with a Nikon EM with Series E 50mm camera that I bought at a flea market for real cheap.

Well, the UV filter is what is called a haze filter, some people leave them on their lenses for protection (that's a whole huge debate, I'm anti-filter myself). Hoya makes a decent filter, and it would fit on your 35, 18-55
No idea about the flash, the fact it only takes 2 batteries means it's not very powerful. Does it have any sort of power controls on it? If not it will probably be pretty useless to you.

Can't be all that great if a Google search shows this thread as the first hit.

You got yourself a Made-in-Japan 52mm Hoya UltraViolet filter. Hoya makes good stuff, but I doubt the quality is on par with today's.

@Davisphoto: I know what a UV filter is, I just don't know how old or how good the HOYA UV filter is that came on 1979-1982 Nikon EM.

@480Sparky: Yeah, I had trouble finding anything on this make and model, and it's really sparce, the only thing it's got is an ON/OFF switch and what appears to be a reference chart for this flash and a ready light. It also has a PASSED - Made in Taiwan sticker. It seems like it might be old crappy flash. Who knows how well it works. As for the filter, I switched it for a B+W UV DIGITAL MRC F-PRO filter, it's the UV-Haze 1x MRC model, this one should work well correct?

Sounds like a basic, bare-bones, low-end, manual flash. It flashes, and there's no way to adjust the flash itself. You must adjust the lens aperture to control exposure.

It might work out in a studio environment for certain uses, like macros or a catchlight for eyes.
