I don't have any ideas but wish him well. I haven't done any iPhone development but Android is fun. If he doesn't have an IDE for that yet I highly recommend IntelliJ IDEA. The community addition is free and includes some nice Android tools. Can you tell I'm a programmer by day?

How about an Around Me app that lets me know where there are neat locations to take photos...like old warehouses with big open windows, tobacco barns, open fields with spots of waist high flowers and cattail plants, river banks with small rapids and walking rocks, parks with wood trails and fall leaves....I will stop now.
