What's new

I'm with Mike and PNA

and traveler, i wondered how you were already so good at using the critique forum :)

you just have to be careful and really read the rules . . . twice, and then just go with it.

wohaaa, this is an interesting read. Interesting to see how some people communicate and interesting to see how the new rules got explained. I truly believe you guys are not out to make our lives miserable, so any conspiracy-theory-like comment is ignored by me. It's obvious that the critique-forum needed a make over and so they came up with this. Well, that's fine and whoever doesn't like it, say so (in a normal manner). Does that work? Yes, because it's how the old critique-forum got changed.
Don't fear the new, be critical if need be and remain civil.
Having said that, I haven't tried working with the new set of rules yet, so I'm not sure if I like them. What I don't like are the stamps. They really have to go. Their tone is patronizing, especially with the added ultimatum. What's wrong with talking to each other? (Hey 'soandso' you've posted this and this, please read the guidelines again). Yes, that's time-consuming at first, but if the forum agrees with the guidelines, time will bring some selfregulation.

so, I'm curious to other likes/dislikes about the new forums.

don't worry I got a message from a moderator that pretty much said if you dont like it stay out.... I think I'm going to take that advice. But the man did ask for our suggestions and I gave him mine.

I'd like to know more about this.

If you doubt that I am telling you the truth, I will be happy to send you details. I think that is the prevailing attitude at the moment in the forum. What I will not do is disclose the details that would sound as thought I had a bone to pick with the messenger in public there has been enough of that already.

Actually I like the person who sent the message in reply to one I sent them. If my post sounded as though it came out of the blue I'm sorry it did not. It was a reply to a message I sent.

huh, seems I missed a lot of trouble here ... so I will stay off that new part of the forum. let others do the exploring and fighting. lazy me will join in once things are settled and waters are calm there ;)

wow, havent you guys been busy :P

This is my personal take on the situation. Would i post one of my general images to the crit section, probably not. But, if i had one image that was special to me... like a wall hanger, or a portrait job for a friend and wanted a final opinion then maybe i would.
Now although intimidating at first, once you read the rules you WILL get a critique... and unlike the old system where you would sometimes think to yourself 'can someone please say something meaningful'... meaningful posts are all you will see. Any others will be removed, this is for your benifit so you dont have to wade through responses.... but NOT ONLY THAT... if your browsing you may want to view someone else photo critque... and isnt it much better to read info you can learn from?

If you the one giving the critique, again just read through the rules one time so you know what the deal is. Then you can enjoy joining in and again, learning as you go from how other people respond to your thoughts. We only put resrictions here so that the conversation stays relevent and can be responed to by the other members and origional poster.

As the TPF staff have mentioned, this is a new idea... and we want to see people getting something out of it that will stay with them, and be useful in future for there own photography skills.

I really dont want to see members getting upset about this... you are all valuable to this forum , so please bear with us and see how it turns out, we are never closed to the idea of change here at TPF.... so im sure we'll find plenty of other ways to upset you in future :greenpbl: (j/k)

I think the most bothersome point of the overall issue is the manner in which the changes were introduced and the actions of a moderator at the outset. The "stamp" thing is a real turnoff and quite offensive. We're all adults here and do not need a ruler smacked across our kuckles....it hurts!

I think that you misunderstand the situation.

There isn't pushback from the people who are posting pictures, as much as there is response from the manner in which the responders are being treated.

The "stamp" thing is a real turnoff

Had a look there now, and I agree that the psychological effect of that stamp is ... probably not a gentle/subtle one. It is more like a slap in the face for some people.

I do understand that the new forum is meant not for chatting but for serious critique. In order to get such a thing working you need some force since people are usually not very disciplined (including myself). I guess it is really hard to find the right tone best for moderating this new corner of the forum.

Also it is rather hard to draw a line between chatting or meaningless comments and serious critique. Especially if the latter is not brought forward in a formal way.

So we should all show some patience and learn ... that includes both sides: the moderators and the people posting comments there.

We're all adults here

technically speaking, not all,
some are actually quite young ... but often better behaved than us adults ;)

Sorry, no, no doubt of the truth of the statement, I'm just expressing my concern over being interested in knowing what exactly the message said and the tone. If you would like to send me details, please do.

OK... so where do we go from here? Charlie indicated that some discussions on our part start and perhaps the committee, with Chase's approval, will reconsider to modifying the guidelines.

I think my position has been clearly stated between the two threads already posted, but I'm ready to continue the input as necessary.

My middle name is "flexible".

One point that I want to be clear about is that there is very little, if anything, here that we do where we flat out say "this is the right approach, and no matter what, we're sticking to it". I just want to be as direct as possible when I say that this is an attempt to make an improvement, and I think it has some valuable changes, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved or that we aren't willing to listen to suggestions. I, for one, absolutely welcome them and I hope and believe the rest of the team that helps me moderate this site feels the same. I believe they do.

As I mentioned before, I was ready to close things down in that section, because my perception was that the value was almost zero. When I expressed my growing concerns with that area, suggestions were made to give people a chance for input, and that is what started this entire process. I'm still flexible regarding improvements and changes, which is why I welcome this thread along with the other one that was started. I'm the last one to want to run the other way from people voicing concerns...again, I welcome them, which is exactly why I've made sure this thread stays open. Please continue to speak your minds and I'll continue to listen and we'll see where things go. You are all important members of this community and it concerns me when people feel they have no input. Hopefully that feeling is starting to subside.

I have a suggestion.

Replace the stamp and associated 'death-penalty-for-double-parking' statements with a simpler, more civil message to be posted in the thread (rather than the message)

Sorry, this image doesn't seem to meet the posted guidelines for the ........ Forum. Please repost this in a more appropriate Forum. (link)
Send me a PM if you think otherwise.

Something similar to this would be civil and respectful. The mod should not be acting as our daddy or our teacher but as the room monitor.

this thread began and continues because of egotism. check your mirror, folks; it isn't mine.
There were major/unproductive distractions but do not club us all in one yoke. The thread continues due to the collective discomfort to the new policies.

'committee of complainers'
We should perhaps re-title this section to 'Complainer's Corner', instead of 'Feedback and Suggestions'.
We were ASKED for feedback/suggestions.

Also it's beyond rude to ask people to people to stay away from that section 'if you don't agree with the new guidelines'. As long as it is not a password protected sub-forum where invitation is reserved only for the elite 'Arteests', everyone here has the right to participate in that section, air their concerns (as long as we have this Feedback section) if any.

My suggestions were already posted in this thread.
1. The stamp is silly. It's akin to yelling. When people yell, you don't pay attention to the message. The tone drowns the well-intended message and it will dissuade people from participating.
2. As long as it's not a "Oh wow" comment or totally off-topic, posts should not be edited or asked to be edited.

oh dont worry i understand completely. I may not have touched on this in my previous statement, but i understand what people are saying.

your feedback is always welcome here dan, and appreciated... yours and any other member whether you've even posted in the new critique section or not.
Also let me assure you that these ideas are not falling on deaf ears.
