As usual TCampbell knows exactly how to explain it so us newbs can understand. Like Forrest Gump's mama. I have taken this advice from a number of people and he IS correct. That being said a good starter Speedlight is the Youngnuo 568 II TTL. It is inexpensive but will suit you well while learning at around $110 it is made for Canon, Nikon, and Sony cameras so make sure you get the correct one. I have the Canon compatible model and really like it. It has virtually all the features that the Canon 580 EX.
