info on photography

IMO, an Internet Forum is NOT the best place to get basic information on a profession. Any question is answered by a total stranger with no obvious credentials beyond the ability to get on the Internet.

Second, photography is an art that sits on top of a craft. Not everyone can be a photographer. Let the OP show that he has done more work on this besides logging on here today and asking questions. Has he read any threads?
Has he looked for people who've asked the questions before?
Does he realize at all that his broad based questions require a damn book?
And yet he expects that, just because he wants to ask a question, that someone will write this book for him.

My advice to the OP.
Read a months worth of old threads.
Get some books from the library.
Understand the field just a bit - and then take some pictures.
Any guidance office or career counselor will tell you to get some basic information on your own and then, when you have better questions, ask them.

Awesome! You're one of "those".

I stopped scrolling there, and then put you on my ignore list.

If you don't understand why I made that comment to him, then good riddance. There are a lot of people here who offer helpful advice and criticism here. Then there are some who just think they are better than everyone else and make themselves feel better by putting KIDS down for absolutely no reason at all, and don't even have a portfolio to back up their trash-talk. Good on you for encouraging that. The kid may not have a camera yet but hope to become a "pro photographer" someday... well, Trever has a big camera and... that's about it. What, he can be blunt, but I can't?

@The_Traveller - Remember, photography's for grown-ups. Have fun mocking people and putting them down. Lovely, encouraging place, this is.

Call me a child, but

Besides KmH's seemingly harsh posts, I have found this forum to be nothing other than a bountiful resource of knowledge, and a perfect place for our aspiring OP to begin his photography journey

@Mocha,

Supposed some few of us spend time answering these questions, giving him all the feedback he wants and then he decides, "well I guess I won't be a photographer after all because I don't have 1) the drive, 2) the time, 3) the experience 4) the money."

This is a photography forum for anywhere from beginning to mature photographers, not a career counselling discussion for people who don't even have a camera or anything but an interest.

Not our job.
If you think this is a worthwhile pursuit, then you be this guy's counselor.

come on guys lets stop all the nagging. OP never said he wanted a dslr and then expected to suddenly become a pro. He aspires to be a pro, whats so wrong with that?

One post and that's it from the OP.

well ok trever1t, i dont wanna rush n buy and have no clue what to look for or what is best for me, makes no sense u have something and u find hell learning the device, hence the reason i asked for "info", also i know i wud need a digital one, so branding doesnt come into play anywhere here??? quality of cameras n stuff is what i want, my budget right now is between US$500-800

thanks willis_927 would look into that

Hi Photo_kid and welcome to the site. Wanting a decent camera in your budget range is just fine. Brand isn't as important as much as a preference in that price range. What are your plans? "PRO" gear will run you significantly more $, not that you can't charge $ using cheaper gear.

Do you already have a Facebook page for your photography?

The very fact that you are thinking of starting into a career in photography with a budget of 500-800 dollars shows you have read nothing at all about the field. That is the cost for a reasonably adequate point and shoot camera.

Asking questions like these when there are hundreds of magazines and columns and reviews makes little sense in the long run because no one here knows you and what your skills are, the depth of your interest or even your ability.

The most productive thing is for you to read some of the vast number of actual resources and decide then how to start your career.

Go get a decent point and shoot in that range, start taking pictures and reading stuff and then you'll be able understand if you still want to and have the skills to be a decent photographer. When you know something, then start asking questions.

I assume this guy is planning well into the future, like 5 to 10 years...

I think $800 would get a fine used rig for learning on. Watch craigslist. For example, a 40D goes for around $550, sometimes even less. He can pick up the nifty fifity for $90. Another $60 for a cf card. $100 left over.

I got my K20d for $400 on eBay, hasn't failed me yet!

Ok let me make things simple, everything said here i will learn from it, be it good or bad. I really just wanted to get an idea as to what would be the best way to start this off, as I'm not looking for a quick fix. As for more details, I want to get into photography, period! I'm not limiting myself, obviously i would start off small and grow as i gain more experience, but if i can be guided as to where i can view books based on photography online(for free lol) thats where i'd rather start, so i can begin getting some research done, I've tried before but as i said this is a new found dream so I'm literally a headless chicken here, but just some info as to where i can get more. So everything being said here is taken seriously by me in terms of advice and i am willing to learn, just need a start.. Thanks in advance
