is there a way to get rid of shadows

Is it poosible to remove shadows from the background of pictures? I'm editing some shots and I'm noticing the clients family member's shadows in the bg.

Remove shadows....as in replace them with something else, or make the background lighter?

Sort of.

The smaller a light source is, like a built-in pop-up flash unit or a hot shoe mounted flash unit, the sharper the shadow edges are and the more noticable the shadows are, even if the subjects are well away from the background.

To make the shadow edges less harsh, and less noticable, the light source has to have a large apparent size. That's why photographers use photographic umbrellas and/or large softboxes to increase the apparent size of the light.
