IS v Monopod

Hi All, looking to buy a Monopod for a trip soon ( can't take tripod) and was wondering whether IS on the camera negates the need for for one? If the monopod is recommended do you need to turn off the IS like it suggests for a tripod? Thanks in anticipation

I occasionally use a monopod for shooting my kids' events. It's not as bulky as a tripod but still gives some added stability, at least up and down. I do use IS even with the monopod - you will not be perfectly still with a monopod, just better. And if you are shooting long zoom like I do at these events, it will magnify those smallest movements.

As for whether IS completely negates the need for a monopod, that depends. How stable are you? How long of a zoom will you be shooting? How much or little light will there be (you will need more stability for longer shutter speeds in lower light)? Etc.

I received an Oben (2400 or something) monopod when I ordered my D600 from B&H. I highly recommend getting one. I used mine for a church play. Even with everyone wearing white (angels) and all the lights on, and having VR; I am so glad that I had the mono. Easy to get around, and offered a lot of stability. I really recommend getting one.

Another vote for monopods. They give me at least a couple of stops over hand holding. For others this may depend on the situation and how steady you are to begin with. I use IS with it because what the monopod does is to eliminate vertical camera movement and help you brace a little better against sideways movement, but there still will be some. Another thing to be careful about at wide apertures is that there can be forward or backward movement, so press the shutter soon after you focus.

Will be using with EF 24-105L IS USM and EF 70-300F/4= 5.6 L is USM Mainly sunny outdoors shooting, can hold smaller lens ok but not the bigger lens, hence the question. Looks like I will need to get one. Thanks to all for the responses[h=1][/h]
