What's new

It Has Begun!

Eh? Is there something I don't know about data storage on an SD card/digital camera? 64MB file - OK 1000MB/GB - 1000MB/64MB = 15.6 images/gigabyte * 16GB card = 250 images per 16 gigabyte card assuming a RAW file of 64MB.

My bad, I said 16 gig and used 2 gig for the math. I was on my first cup of coffee still trying to wake up.

I understand completely.

I love how people can bash something before its even released, tested and used in the field by YOU!

Well, file size is something you can bash on before something is released. There's no real way about getting around the file size. It could perform like no other camera in history, but the file size will still be enormous. So, that's something we can already comment on. It's something we can predict, unlike the image quality, noise performance, AF, features, build quality, etc, etc.

I was hinting more towards the MP bashing, but I see your pioint.

Since the product doesn't even exist yet, the entire discussion is hypothetical. If Ford was rumored to release a Mustang that can go about 60 miles on a tank of gas, I would bash that, too.

I don't need to test something to know it's not something I want. Heck, I've never shot with a D3000 or Canon T2i, but I can look at the specs and realize it's not something I am even remotely interested in. Never shot with a 18-55 kit lens, either. I don't need to. I know I don't want it.

Those specs, as rumored, cater to a very limited market. Just as the D3x is a very limited market. I'm not a part of that market. Doesn't make it a bad camera, just not something I'm interested in. I have a feeling that a lot of other photographers will feel the same way.

Instead of using large RAW, you can use medium RAW and end up with about 2/3 the file size... Amazing that the designers saw this rant coming years ago. Argument over.

>SNIP>At an average wedding, I'll shoot around 700 photos. To support the reported specs, I would need to spend about $700 just in memory cards. Then it would take me 3 times longer to get the files to a computer, require 6 DVD's instead of 2 DVD's so I can get them to the main shooter. Then, if I want to process the files, I would probably have to buy a new computer, more external harddrives, and it would still take longer.

I don't know who the new 'specs' are marketed at, but it certainly isn't me. I don't want a bigger D7000 sensor. I want a better D3 sensor.

Like I said, if these specs are accurate, I will be shooting with used D3/D3s/D700's for the rest of my life.

Yeah, I agree with your points of view K. Especially the comment that what is most-desirable is, "a better D3 sensor", and by that I think you're referring to the shared sensor found in the original D3 and the D700; the sensor in the D3s is even better at high-ISO image quality than the one found in the D3 and D700 bodies. And as to the possibility of 36MP capture size; Canon has used M-Raw or Medium-sized RAW capture as an option, and I sure as heck hope that a 36-MP camera will allow M-Raw and also S-Raw options, in addition to full-sized RAW capture. I don't think Nikon has as yet made a camera that allows the user to shoot smaller-than-full-resolution RAW files, but maybe I'm in error about that. Regardless, if the new D800 spits out a 64-megabyte NEF file, that's going to be overkill for many, many uses.

I guess we will know soon enough what this new camera can do. AND, even more interestingly, we'll find out what existing lenses can do.

I wish Nikon was as careless as Apple and would habitually leave their new products in bars for people to blog about......

That would reduce all the speculation!

As the day gets closer, what do you think about the rumored specs, and the almost-rumored secondary announcements?
