What's new

Just got my 1st circular polarizer, any tips?

So, if people with questions (even supposedly simple ones) shouldn't come here, but use google instead, what would be a better use for this forum?

Benny's response was juvenile, arrogant and insulting. NAME CALLING? REALLY? And you're defending that!?

Not insulting those that DO give you an answer would be a start regarding YOUR question of a better use of this forum.

Derrel gave him several links to ARTICLE (which is what this guy asked for)! Was he suppose to go to his home and personally SHOW him how to turn it? He asked a question and immediately got a helpful response.

A forum board like this is for information and conversation - not insulting someone because they don't kiss your **s and teach you everything you need to know about your hobby.

That my friend is NOT what a forum board is about.

And the bottom line, I mean, c'mon - how do you use a circular polarizer? You need a discussion about THAT?

Perhaps the question was simplistic. But it was a question regardless. He didn't need to act rude towards Derrel's response, I agree with that.

A forum is not for insults (unless that's the theme of the forum), I agree with that.

But I won't be suckered into some sort of guilt trip over something I didn't do. Will you show me where I defended the name calling?

If it's something new to you, how do you know it's simple 'till you ask? And the opening question was an attempt to initiate a conversation about it. Also Derrel's later reply demonstrated that there is room for some conversation about it. It's more than just what the polarizer does, it's also about the creative uses of it and when not to use it. In one concise post Derrel gave more useful info that an hour's worth of googling.

The people that come here asking these beginner's questions are... well... beginners. They don't alwas know that something is "done to death" cause it's all new to them. And searching doesn't always help if you don't know what to search for.

I think we all just need a happy pill and a group hug. Whaddya say?

:hug::

Looking for help then calling someone a dips**t doesn't deserve conversation imo. out.

I gotcha, and I agree. Yes, the reaction was over the top.

I get a little tired of "Google it" and "Did you use the search before you asked" answers on forums in general. On the other hand getting all twisted in a knot over one is no better.

Like I said, asking a question is as much about the conversation as it is the answer. Name calling and insults aren't likely to pull a bad start out of the mud either.

They say people can hear the smile if you wear one while you're talking or writing. So smile when you call someone dip****... :sexywink:

You know, we had a pretty heated conversation here the other night over composition and learning. It got heated at moments, but people stayed civil. It was a damned interestion conversation too... Sometimes you gott keep all this in perspective and have a sense of humor.

Oh, thank you, I thought I was the only one that wanted to smile and hug...

I like this last comment, thank you Chamelion

This is usually a normal response when I get answers. Nothing but smart ass comments. The "professionals" need to remember that they were beginners at one time and do remember that this is a beginners forum. If your so smart, then stay out!

Just went through some of your threads, I didn't see ANY smartass remarks

This is a site that will not give you pat on the back for bad photographs, they will help you if you listen and don't take things so personal. You are lucky you are getting responses too lol, when I started I struggled getting anything!

^I DIDN'T get more than 3 responses for the first few threads. I really debated changing my profile picture to a female...

Gonna go out today and practice a bit with it?? Any tips or articles I can read so I know how to use it properly?

Just ignore the judge jury and executioner types on the forums.

Perhaps the best tip you can get from experienced users is to try very hard to think out side the box. The tendency is to use it to get a good sky. However it has equal application for windows, glass, water. metal and other things. Try to think "polarizer" when it would generally not cross a persons mind.

The whole point of "googling", in my opinion, is to find out the answer to a question you may have about a given subject.

The whole point of a forum is for people to gather together to discuss different topics relating to the theme of the forum.

The reason I would come to a forum to ask a question I could have "googled" instead is so that, yeah, I don't have to wade through a bunch of possibly baloney answers when I could come to a place that is dedicated to learning, and is filled with people that have knowledge about my inquiry, which, correct me if I'm mistaken, is what this forum is all about.

Why have a forum at all then? Why not just glob onto google for everything we need?

So, if people with questions (even supposedly simple ones) shouldn't come here, but use google instead, what would be a better use for this forum?

A voice of sanity and reason... falling upon deaf ears... except mines

Really? I mean... REALLY? :er:

Yes and because the FIRST time EVER you used a circular polarizer you didn't need directions and popped it on and started using it.
Theres PLENTY to discuss about polarizers...

OP:

Best angle is 45 degrees from the sun...that was easy...took me 5 seconds to write...almost as long to mention google

Natural polarisation is uneven across the sky, with the most extreme effect when you're at 90 degrees to the sun.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :hug::
