What's new

Just got my 1st circular polarizer, any tips?

This is usually a normal response when I get answers. Nothing but smart ass comments. The "professionals" need to remember that they were beginners at one time and do remember that this is a beginners forum. If your so smart, then stay out!

Just went through some of your threads, I didn't see ANY smartass remarks

This is a site that will not give you pat on the back for bad photographs, they will help you if you listen and don't take things so personal. You are lucky you are getting responses too lol, when I started I struggled getting anything!

I agree with this. Sometimes I feel a little intimdated posting up a pic (in fact I've only posted up one) for C&C because most of the responses will be REAL, and sometimes harsh (especially from you Geaux j/k =P) but honestly, do you really want people saying "Oh yeah that's a great photo! So nice" When really it looks like flippin' crap? Their responses might be kinda harsh sometimes, or whatever, but they really only want to help, and it makes you want to post up your best photographs, not just pics that say - oh hey, look at this cool SNAPSHOT pic I took that anybody with a camera and half a brain could take!

No, I want honest coments, but there are constructive and destructive ways to deliver them.

"Damn, that looks like crap, no sense of composition and the focus sux," isn't particularly useful and only really serves to destroy enthusiam. Especially if the shooter really liked what they'd done.

I think the issue is less abouyt what is said, it's more about how it's delivered.

There is also an expectation of proper etiquette by all forum users, including those asking questions and their response to the answers they receive. This is not a classroom where you are entitled to an education.

Had the OS not hit back with an insult to the responder, this thread could have been informative and helped him. As it is, a good insight on how NOT to post in this forum!

It's a give and take. Whether you think the question had merrit or not there was no reason to snipe at the OP for asking the question. I don't honestly know if that was Derrel's intention, or if he even might've been playing around... But the OP felt he was being sniped at.

There is a feeling here, in some thread of an underlying hostility and impatience for beginners. Like they're a bunch of kids running loose in the department store annoying the adults. I really don't get that.

Better to just let someone else answer the question than belittle the person asking it.

I don't think of myself as a true beginner, but there are still some very basic ideas I still don't quite grasp... I'm used to film and digital is just different enough to get me into trouble sometimes. I'm quite capable of asking some pretty stupid questions myself. And I've never even touched a studio or any studio equipment. I'm clueless. So if I ever do venture down that road, no plans to at the moment, I'm gonna be asking a pile of dumba$$ questions....

I too just purchased my first CPL for an upcoming trip to Afghanistan. I don't know much about them and heard from a more experienced photographer they can help produce some great landscape shots, so when I saw the title of this thread I was surprised at the uncanny relevance to my development as a beginning photographer.

That being said, I am extremely disappointed with what the thread has offered me so far, which is a lot of nothing.

The question OP has is obviously below the level of expertise the more experienced contributors have. BUT HE POSTED IT IN THE BEGINNER'S SECTION!

So to the guy with the condescending post of google results that took him all of four seconds, etc. What the heck is your problem. As stated someone would come to a forum like this to learn from experienced photographers and receive insight that isn't available at other venues. Sadly though, you chose to insult his intelligence, rather than aid his (or my) development. Would it have been too much to ask for that you posted google results that you had screened for their accuracy or relevance, instead of throwing up 4 seconds worth of results with the condescending sub script that you did leave?

To everyone else who is trying to troll and saying OP is ungrateful or what have you, you guys are no better.

This is my first and last post. I am going to delete this account and use a different forum, which is unfortunate because I was told this one was the best out there. Sadly, I must disagree.

In all fairness, everyone can have a bad day. If your read into the thread, Derrel gave an excellent answer later and he did go beyond just a curt "google it." Derrel knows his stuff and there is a wealth of info here. I think you should give the place more of a chance. I agree there are some issues, but, I don't know, there's more to this place than that.

Best angle is 45 degrees from the sun...
A CPL is most effective when at 90° to the light source.

You can also adjust the CPL without removing the lens hood. Carefully run your finger on the inside of the hood until contact is made with the filter. Turn as desired.

Wow. Afghanistan is going to be a little bit tougher environment than this cozy photo forum. Good luck over there.
