On both of these I am playing with the light, accentuating the flare in #1 for an end of summer feel, taking level down a notch on #2.

Thanks! I'm really diggin' into freq separation. It's fairly labor intensive and I'm just beginning to get the hang of it. I hope I'm not overdoing it, I know that's my tendency so I've been backing off quite a bit

Since I have PSE and not CC, I can't really try that process. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the processing but I hope to be upgrading my Laptop and getting CC, so I can learn more about it. (I've watched a couple of videos).

Yes, I've played around with it for a couple of months and watch YouTube videos now and then to learn more on the technique. It seems I just need to keep at it till it becomes second nature and I'm less dependent on plugins.

Try it for free in gimp, It's under Filters->Generic->Wavelet Decompose. Let's you separate into 2-10 different frequency channels.

You can of course do the separation manually, which can give you much nicer areas to work with. Myself I've been experimenting with manual separation using other blurs than Gaussian. If you're interested in manual frequency separation using gimp, I can make a video.

This is my new favorite editing technique.

I've taken a look at your larger format version on flickr to get an idea what's happening with the skin texture. Two things strike me about it: the eyes are soft and there appears to be an unnatural amount of smoothing on the skin.

I don't know if the eyes are just soft in the original or if this is from the technique you used. If you deleted or change the opacity of an entire frequency channel that certainly could happen. How many frequency channels are you using?

What sort of techniques are you using?

I find myself cloning on high freq levels, masking on mid freq levels and airbrushing on the lower frequency levels. But this isn't the only way to go

It's soft, this is a 100% crop from the D800 and I did the best I could with it. 2 layers, hi/low. Mostly clone on low and healing on hi but like I said, still trying to get it down.

IMHO more layers allows you to work in a more subtle fashion. When i use gimps wavelet decompose I use 5, if I manually make the layers 3 is usually good.

I'd practice on a sharp photo, this technique is all about preserving the high frequency textures which won't be present if the picture is soft.
