What's new

Kayla - C&C always welcome!

Really, it's too soft on the second for me to say it's a keeper.... not as stunning as your usual work.

Only if looked at full size ya? She's using it for social media only. I've been having issues with focus on my 85mm when shooting full length portraits. At that range my focus box is much larger than the eyes and I seem to be missing focus A LOT lately. When shooting 3/4 or less I have no issue even at f1.4, anything I can do?

Setup a tripod, compose, and focus using live-view and zooming in. I've done this a few times lately and it actually seems to work quite well. That way you can ensure nailed focus, which is tough with an 85 wide-open at a distance of 15 or more feet [emoji5]️

OR buy a Zeiss 85 1.4 Otus, add a ground glass viewfinder to your D800, and go HAM!

Ya, although I have a decent tripod I'm not going to use it. I travel lightly. I don't want to lug anything. I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Practice my breathing techniques.

have you considered a monopod?
we have a manfrotto self standing monopod and it works great.
the legs keep us from having to lay the monopod down somewhere when we need to let go for a minute or two.
ours has no trouble supporting a D7100 w/grip, 70-200 f/2.8, and flash bracet w/flash.
its not as stable as a tripod obviously, but its light, easy to carry, and good for stability.

When I shoot this is what I bring.

-Camera body
-Single lens (always the 85)
-Compact flash card
-battery (hopefully charged)

No strap, sling, bag, light, reflector, nothing. Camera in hand.

Now, it's not a matter of camera shake or my instability. My shutter speed is plenty. It's a matter of the focus box (in view finder) being too large and my DOF being too small. Or so I think but even if I increase DOF I still miss some...hmmm! I'd hate to have to use a crutch!

BTW I have a nice monopod too (I just don't use it)

That's it?! Don't you have the amazing 200 f2?!

That's it and NO, that beast was like 7lbs alone and totally didn't fit within my style of shooting. I sold it and made a very healthy profit which allowed me to get the 85G for free and put a G in my pocket ;)

I shoot commando style ;)

I'm certainly not trying to change your way of shooting, just a thought change. I wouldn't see a monopod as a crutch, just an alternative way of doing things. Keep in mind, that it takes a while of consistent use to change a habit.

In #1 there is a string or something coming off here back, right below her arm, it's driving me nuts!!!;)
