LaCie 250GB Extreme HD

Ok, got my LaCie 250GB HD now and have done one back up of all files... In the laCie insructions it said not to partition the HD if I'm working in OSX all the time. Is this advisable? So now I have a complete copy of my internal HD on my external and that is it!!!

I'm a newbie to this and need advise.

I have many digital images as i'm a keen photographer and will soon be taking images of weddings. Can anyone suggest a good way of partitioning my new 250GB external HD and what sort of back ups would you suggest? My internal HD is 160GB.
