The Leica M limited edition 60 - digital Leica without a backside monitor - apparently goes mass production.

Somehow I get the feeling Leica REALLY REALLY REALLY wants me a as a customer, haha.

Why does leica keep making worse versions of their products by removing features? This is on par with the new macbook that got rid of all of the ports. People want increased functionality not decreased. This is a step in the wrong direction.

Bad comparison.

On a notebook I want external ports because it gives me connectivity. I can work better.

During photography, getting rid of all these controls means you can focus on the most important - focus and the exposure "triangle".

One final note about this: the new (not yet out) Fuji X-Pro2 also has a suprisingly low number of controls.

In my understanding it will most likely be a cheaper M, not an especially expensive one ?

Just like the recent M Type 262 (which should really have been a M-E).

And as I pointed out, I definitely see the appeal of having a very simple camera. Kind of like a digital Leica M3.

I do actually find the screen distracting, I turn it off, but it always manages to come back on.

I think derrel suggested I tape a film box end on it.

I didnt see a price tag on it, but if its Leica, its going to be expensive regardless of what it is.
the specs on it look pretty good, but at this stage in the digital game, whose specs don't? Even the new Samsung MILC has great specs.

If by "purest" you mean "take out all semi-automatic modes, strip down the camera, and charge (probably) 3 times as much as any other comparable model" then sure, I guess it is.

I mean, its only a 20mp sensor...perfectly fine really, but certainly nothing groundbreaking.
ISO 100-6400 (unless changed in actual production of course) definitely nothing impressive there.
1-4000 shutter speed. pretty average .
OVF with electronic display. nothing new there either.
"true rangefinder manual focus". dont even know what that means. I think Leica is just making stuff up now.

fujis focus peaking really made manual focus an option for me again...i cant imagine Leica's manual focus system being so much better that its the "true" manual focus for rangefinders. Fuji also offers two other manual focus "modes" (standard and digital split image) which i really have not explored much yet. ('cause i find focus peaking to be really effective for me)

all im seeing is a stripped down MILC with only manual focus available.
im sure it will be deliciously expensive to please the hipsters and groupies that want to be able to brag about the "purism" of digital photography.

in all honesty, I dont really think about anything digital when someone talks about "purism". really, I dont think that word even has any significant meaning when it comes to photography...unless maybe your shooting wet plate?
its just a buzzword used to sell a product.
however, if you go by what could be considered a contemporary meaning for "purism" when used in the context of photography, I think of @limr and @gsgary, people that use the cameras they do for the love of the game, not because of cool advertising and modern retro-sounding slogans.

I haven't shot film in a while. i think the last rolls i got developed were from my mamiya 645 1000s, and my Pentax 110 super.
(we did shoot a roll through the wifes rolleiflex 3.5E shortly before we sold it)
I really do miss that little pentax. i never enjoyed shooting as much as i did when i used that camera, and it was probably the most stripped down version of anything you could ever imagine.

that being said, if I had the money, I would shoot with a Leica S medium format digital camera.
