lens for D800

I have preordered a Nikon D800 and tentatively plan on getting the Nikon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6G VRII lens and probably the 14-24 mm wide angle lens. Comments on these choices? Cost is not particularly a factor.
Amazon.com: Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & PhotoThere's a used one for $1,300. I'd take it over the 28-300.
I didn't see a vrII for 1300$, you might get a vrI. I have the vrI no need to upgrade.

I tried the 28-300 on my D800 (yes, I have that lens and use it for travel) and had better than expected results with it. It's a great lens, nice and sharp, of course at the long end it's like looking through sunglasses and has a ton of vignetting but beyond that it has it's place.

That in mind, it's not a go to lens for the D800 nor should it ever be, if you're looking for a walkaround lens sure, get it but consider getting some pro glass for it in addition to the 28-300. The D800 is (arguably) a pro body that needs high end glass to shine, without good glass you might want to reconsider and get a D700 until you can afford to do it right.

thanks for the comments. I have ordered the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 along with the D800. Now just waiting, waiting and waiting for the D800 to be shipped along with the glass.

Don't forget 85mm f1.4g. You will need it for sure. ;)

AF-S 85mm f1.8G. Then, I will wait and see if the future release f1.8 wide angle primes are any good.

My lenses for my d700 ( and soon to be D800 when i get the damn phonecall :grumpy:) are

nikon14-24mm 2.8
nikon50mm 1.4
nikon24-120mm
nikon80-200mm 2.8

i love them all except the 24-120 hardly gets any use.

I will use the 70-200 for most outdoor portraiture but for walkaround the 24-70...until I get my hands on a 35f/1.4G :D but that's prolly xmas
I have the 24-70....not a good walkabout lens - too bulky, heavy and slow. My walkabout lens is the 50/1.4

I have to say that is the first time I heard of the 24-70 being slow.

Good choice i got the 24-70 and 70-200 so far and love them. As far as zoom lens go, they are the best.

I agree with the bulky and heavy, but not slow. 2.8 is about where i want to be or slower for walk around. I dont need extreme shallow DOF for most walk around photography. Even at 2.8 i find the need for a bit more DOF a lot of the time. I would much rather have a sharp 24-70 range and a stop slower, then a prime stop faster for a walk around lens. Now dedicated to a single photo your looking to get. Sure a prime is better
