I recently purchased my Nikon D40. I need to get a telephoto lens to take with me to the track. I take pics of friends as they race motorcycles. What length would you suggest. I was thinking of a 75-200 or 300. Thanks

Well, a D40 limits your choices to pretty much two under $500, and one more under $750.

The 55-200 AF-S VR is a logical choice because it is cheap and has VR. Not the world's greatest (or fastest lens) but for $250 you can do far worse.

Next up is the 70-300 AF-S VR at $500. Decent consumer lens, also fairly slow but it is quite sharp.

At $750 (if you can find one) is the excellent all-purpose 18-200 AF-S VR... a great carry-around lens.

The only other lenses to consider are those made by Sigma, and while Sigma makes some good lenses, the ones in your size range are considerably more expensive... Their 70-200 DG Macro is excellent at $800 or so, but if it was me I would rather have the Nikon 18-200 for the same money.
