LENS HOOD - why and when

I have an aftermarket plastic screw in hood that is petal shaped. Actually it may have saved my lens when I fell in a 5' deep trench that was hidden by weeds almost as high. It got ripped off in the fall but no damage to camera or lens.

Hmm. So basically any types of hoods wouldnt be a problem as long as it fits the camera lens right? I just got my first SLR canon 60D with the 135mm lens.
Anyone can suggest which hood should i get?

The one designed for the lens. Each OEM lens hood is designed to provide maximum function for that particular lens.
