Thanks, Overread. It's a pita without a tripod, but after hitting the shutter 20 times, I got about 2 focused shots. This thread should be cleaned up and stickied.

What but then you'll never be able to relive the memories!

Also tripods are good for static but you try tracking a live subject and a tripod is a nightmare unless its moving very very very very slowly

I guess you have a point. Even though the spiders will sit around for a little bit, by the time I have one setup, I'm sure they're gone.

Yeah, but after two years of macro shooting being 95% of my shooting, a tripod is a necessity for the sharpest shots. Just get good at moving it and adjusting it as ninja as possible. Even at 1/250 it's better on a tripod. I fought it as long as I could but I just had to come to terms that I just got sharper results with a tripod.

And yes, you need to learn how to diffuse a flash to the point you can barely tell it's a flash.
