Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I would like a good prime lenses for portraits so i can blur the background while keeping my target in focus. Any help or pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Also took some photos as of late and they are on my flickr account. Would like to know how I could get my Flickr photos to show up on here. Thank you advance

You're looking for a "fast" prime, that is, one with a large maximum aperture, such as 1.4, 1.8, or 2.0 - also remember that the longer the focal length, the shallower the depth of field for a given aperture a lens will have. 85 and 105mm lenses are considered good portrait lenses for FF bodies and the 50 is a good length on cop-sensor bodies.

Find the flickr image you wish to insert here (the actual, sized version - 800px wide or less). Right-click it and copy it's URL. Use the insert image icon here in Reply and paste the image URL in the pop-up box.

How much is would that kind of lenses run me though? I got a D3100? I aint trying to break the piggy bank no more. as i just purchased the camera about 2 months ago. Price is somewhat of an issue. Also does that lens have VR? thank u in advance

I'm finding the 70-200vr to be a very forgiving lens for portraiture ;) I haven't dismounted it yet! 50 f1.8 and 85 f1.8 are more affordable and potent lenses as well.

'nifty' 50 is only #125 new ;)

Good look on the 50mm,might have to pick that one up, or might save up for the 85mm. not sure yet, depends on other expenses. Was also looking at an sb-400 flash as well. We'll see what winds up happening.

i'll probably wind up just getting the 50mm cuz the 35mm is sold out everywhere i look and its kinda pricy. the 50mm seems to be the direction i might wind up getting

You should be aware that the 50mm will not autofocus on your D3100, as it does not have an internal motor. The 35mm does autofocus on your D3100. Just something to consider.

I found my 35mm in stock at Camcor ($199 + S&H):
Nikon 35mm F1.8 G AF-S DX NIKKOR Lens (52mm Filter Size) | Cameras - Lenses | Camcor.com

Hope this helps,
Scott

Good looking out ulrichsd I definately appreciate the goodlook on the stat with that lens. Its definately something i wanted on a lens. I think thats a sign I need to be able to tell what features each lens comes with.

Just in case you did not aware of. You maybe able to obtain the same effect of subject in focus while background is out of focus (blurry) with your telephoto zoom lens as long as you have enough room to work on (i.e. Outdoor during the day)
