Very distracting background, however I do understand that when shooting birds THEY pick the background. I'd recommend cropping it some more to eliminate more of the background and emphasize the subject. Also, next time try to get down lower so that you aren't looking down at the bird so much. That's also difficult to do but when you can it really helps.

Yes a crop would help and also blurring ,softening the bkgnd would help

Yikes ,,, what'd you do him with that edit?

Pretty bird, but because of the angle you took the shot from it looks so small in the center of the frame. For some weird reason the cornstalks look really huge and this rooster looks small. A lower perspective would be better, but with pheasant on the run you don't get a chance to set up low for them often unless you belly flop into the corn stubble. It might have helped to shoot with the lens at a wider aperture to isolate the rooster in the frame.

As far as a post edit, recrop so he's not bullseyed in the middle of the shot, putting him in the bottom left quadrant with room to run into. Try to mask him and the area in front/behind that is on the same plane and then go a bit easier on a guassian blur on the areas beyond that to soften things a bit.

Ummm, isn't that a pheasant not a rooster?

So Tony I hate to ask but, can you edit this for me so I can see what your talking about?

5 mins edit. Field blur, desaturation of bg, color boost on bird and cropping.

I'd rather see the bigger bird then the corn stalks, but I guess that's the record shots coming out in me.

Ok I get it now, I have to admit with the bird and some stalks clear and the rest blurred it looks a lot nicer.
Thanks everyone.

Cut bird out, flipped, cloned in bg, blurred bg and added a sweet hat.

I had to add the shoes to replace the hidden feet.
