Lighting equipment

You'll need to give us a few clues to help you out much here - the range is wide. What sort of photography are you planning on doing, what budget do you have available, where in the world are you located, what are your future plans etc. If you can put a little meat on the bones, we may be able to give you some suggestions.

Right now just family's and kids I am taking these in my home with some natural light.

To shoot families/multiple people inside, you will need a pretty big room. How big is the room you have to use?

Still no budget, stated. All light is natural light. If you mean window light, which direction does the window face? North facing windws usually provide the best ambient light.

A good lighting setup for at home use to shoot families and kids will run you about $4000. A decent set-up will run you about 1/2 that.

An El Cheapo, mostly junk, home hobby lighting kit off of Amazon.com will cost you about $150.

Don't have a price range nothing to expensive though, window light the windows face the south. Right now just doing them for family and friends this will be my first with lighting equipment I haven't even read anything about it yet. I would like to get something to use in the future if my photography grows. Room is 15 X 14 what would be a good size room? I wish I had a bigger space

I got a $250 kit off Amazon.. don't do it!! I have already replaced the bulbs (because they were not bright enough), and I replaced one of the umbrellas (trying to get more light to bounce onto my subjects). Even with the brighter bulbs, I'm still wanting more light, mostly because I like to also shoot little kids and right now I'm having to put the umbrellas really close to them to get a good picture!

If I want to get the next bulb up, I will have to purchase new electric units because the ones that came with the kit are only made for up to a certain wattage, and I'm there.

The backdrops that came with the kit are ok I guess, except that I had to get the white and the black replaced because of snags in the muslin. The backdrop stand is ok, but the middle of it isn't supported so I can't extend it all the way out.

It came with smaller umbrellas, I purchased larger ones and the stands have a hard time supporting the extra wt...

I use it, because its what I have, but I would definately think about not getting a "kit" on Amazon, or if you do, make sure you get one that can offer you what you need. If I could do it over again, I would just buy peice by peice instead of being stuck with whatever comes in a kit. The catch22 ~ I wouldn't have ever known what I needed before i got this and found out it wasn't ideal.

I just wouldn't purchase a kit. I would learn what I needed and then purchase peice by peice... Thats if I could do it all over again...

Amazon is like any other site hit and miss. If you know a good site let me know I will check them out! Thanks

Yeah, I would say no to kits or amazon. You should piece out a kit that works for you, and purchase it at a store where they don't sell auto parts, baby food, and camera gear. Also, think about wether you want continuous lights or flashes. I would never really go with continuous lights (unless your going with some high end kino flo lights or similar). Then, ask your self: do I want to take the lights outside, say to a park for family photos in the fall?

If you post your answers that should let us know what would work best for you. Because every photographer prefers different types of gear.
