Lightstand weights?

I bought a lightstand for my speedlite and there is no hook on it for weights, I was wondering if anyone has a DIY for weights that dont require hanging form the stand. what do you use?

Can't you just drape sandbags or shot bags over the legs or the leg braces, which should be horizontal on a normal light stand?

Your prolly right, I wonder why though.

I know my stand is really light and will def be blowing away with no weights

Yes, like I said, drape shot bags or sand bags over the leg braces, which should always be horizontal for maximum stability. That is normal practice. Lowel make useful iron weights that sit right on the braces, but not many people use them, I suspect. The Lowel weights also have a 5/8 spigot and receptacle. If you have a cable running to the light (which you probably do not have) always run it under a leg, so that a pull on the cable does not pull the stand over. All standard practice.

You can also hang shot bags from the apex of the legs, or even from the knobs on the upright. A small clip or karabiner may help with that.

Be careful which modifier you use. I just lost a monolight to the wind.... With 10 lbs on the bottom of the light stand.. Dang umbrellas.

OK I have the same problem, I did a review of similar GOOD stands, but light, I was concerned for my gear, my Metz 45 CL-4 Digital flash and quantum battery and stofen make £900, so, solution.

Want a hook, get a cable tie and attach one part of these (available on ebay £1, to a bag/weight and the other to the stand, clip on when needed.

I carry the uber-light manfrottos and speedlights out when on the bike and want to carry gear. I use the heaviest ankle weights wally world sells, they're cheap and they work GREAT on the legs.

added bonus is they are easy to carry from vehicle to location - strap -em around your ankles =)

Well, I take that back, I have seen people use the hooks on c stands. Just never seen hook weight hanging from a vertical stand.

Here's a plain 15 lb shot bag on the small Avenger stand. The lower the weight, the more stable.

I really like the ankle weight idea since you can wrap them and velcro them!

I pick up those velcro-on wrist and ankle weights that people use for excercising. They're cheap like borscht in thrift stores and flea-markets, and while not as heavy as regular shot bags, a lot easier to use (I find) especially if you're working outside the studio.
