Looking for camera to lure girlfriend into photography

We'll, I gotta say that this is one of the more honest threads I've read. I mean here is Gavjenks who builds cameras out of found objects, and he's willing to get his gal an AUTOMATIC camera! Now if that isn't just the sweetest thing!

Here's some advice from a guy that's been married to the same woman for 21 years. It's on you if you take it or not.

NEVER underestimate the politeness of a woman early on in a relationship. Early on = first 5-7 years for you newbs a out there. The only way to shop for a woman is to sneak behind them online, see what's "saved for later" in their Amazon cart. See where the pages are folded in their catologs and magazines. Watch where they stop and pay attention to something in a store for an unusually long amount of time in your plain sight and walk away seemingly disinterested.

But NEVER! I mean NEVER!!!! Think that your idea of "shared hobbies" and things to do together are a good idea. And NEVER Discuss with her a gift idea that is intended for her. That makes you the most unoriginal, non caring sap to walk the face of the earth.

She'll smile and her false appreciation will shine through only to bury that rage in a furnace deep inside. One day, when you think you're on top of your game, it will all come out.......

"You bought that camera for you!!!!!! And you never give any thought to making a gift personal and ONLY about me."

Don't worry about replying, or telling me "my girlfriends not like that." ..... Just know you've been warned. Save that quote, because it might not happen on this one, but one day you'll hear it again and you'll know I was right.

You are a guy, and you will NEVER get ahead of the game reinventing the wheel that every other dope has already ridden on. It's not pessimism it's experience.

There were a few factors that combines to get my particular woman into photography.

1) I got into it.
2) We had a baby she wanted to photo (this is an advanced form of "how to get her into photography", and not for the feint of heart)
3) We started going out very regularly with the baby to zoos and stuff and taking pictures (me at first, but taking the photos meant not being the with the baby, so she got into it).

I actually *wanted* to use her interest in photography to buy "her" a bridge camera (so I'd have one around to play with); but she actually liked the SLR more.

We had had a Canon S3 once that was just the wrong camera. I decided after that either full bore CL cameras, or point-and-click (the latter of which is basically obsolete, we have those in our phones).

FYI: "Nothing in the world can possibly prove I am wrong about this. If it happens, I'm right, and if it doesn't happen, it just will happen soon" is not a very convincing rhetorical technique, and I would not make a habit out of it if I were you. I mean you may happen to be right, but that doesn't add anything.
Unfalsifiability

Still, the first paragraph at least rings pretty true and useful to me. Thank you. Those are the sorts of things that I do in fact choose for 90% of gifts, but you suggest some pretty effective sounding practical techniques.

Lol Naive too.

I hate to break it to you but using logic and reason with a woman is like using gas to fight a fire.

Gross generalization I know but based on numerous experiments over the years I have confirmed my hypothesis.

1) Wow.

2) I was referring to the way Ingerson wrote his post, and judging by the picture, Ingerson is not a woman.
I could be wrong about that.

Yeah pretty rude of me.

My god, are all you men married to real women or cardboard cutout stereotypes???

For y'all's information, I was the one who pulled my boyfriend back into film photography. He had some interest in photography and had gone digital. It started on vacations when he'd bring his digital and I'd bring my film camera. Eventually, he pulled out his old film camera and we'd go out specifically to go shooting. Then we both sort of fed into and off of each other's interest. We diverge in some aspects, but we definitely share the interest and the hobby, and we absolutely enjoy our time together when we are out shooting.

He's given me cameras, I've given him cameras, and yes, we often discuss it first. I don't think he's an 'uncaring sap' but someone who is interested in making sure he gets something that I actually want. Why on earth would I expect him to read my mind and automatically know what I want?

Not all of us are game players. I would never pull any crap like that. If I want something, I discuss it openly. And my relationship is almost 9 years in, so I'm past your defined "noob" period. :P

I know you're not talking to me and I know there's probably a bit of tongue in your cheek (at least I hope so - otherwise, you are painting a very unflattering image of your wife/marriage), but I'll tell you right now: I'm not like that. I don't believe there is any 'game' to be played and I personally have little patience for people of either gender who conduct themselves that way in a relationship - any relationship, not just romantic.

Counter point: Why?

Here is the list of things I have bought for my wife to try to get her into the same hobby I enjoy:
1 Snowboard, boots, bindings, jacket, pants, gloves, goggles.
1 Guitar (electric)
1 Guitar Amp
1 Fishing pole with tackle
1 Mountain Bike

Guess how many of those things she uses? Not a single one. Save you're money, buy her a pretty shiny thing or take her out on a nice date.

Runnah for Prez after whatever date I gave Lenore the last time.

You think I'd relinquish control?? :queen:

if it were me, in all honesty. I would worry more about if she could cook a good dinner or please in other ways than if she like photography.

So apparently logic and reason doesn't work with you, either, eh? ;) Work on faulty premises much?

Oh **** runnah! Apparently one of the women mustered enough logic and reason to figure out how to log onto a computer and read everything! Do I use gas or water to douse the fiery emotions she is infecting us with? I'm confused now  And so afraid...

You can't use water because she'll melt!
