I'm headed to Palm Springs, CA and I'm renting an 100mm macro lens. I've rented a 50 in the past and was curious with the lens I'm getting for this weekend the larger the number, does it mean I don't have to get as close? Will the pics I take this weekend get even more macro than the 50mm?

Which 50mm macro lens did you use before? Most are true macro lenses so you'll get the same amount of magnification as with the 100mm macro, save that the 100mm will let you take the shot from slightly further away than the 50mm. However there are one or two (the canon 50mm macro for example) that are not true macro lenses and will only get to half true macro - thus meaning that the 100mm will give you even more magnification (if that was the lens you used before)
