I got my 55-200mm lens today and I'm in love. I only had about 20 minutes to mess with it so I just stuck my dog out in the backyard and used him as my subject. I know some of them probably look overexposed (#4). It was just REALLY sunny out there. The technical stuff is still very new to me, since I've only had my DSLR since Saturday. These were shot on full manual. Also, I know that his lead is distracting in #3 and #5, but he HAS to be on it...he's not so great at staying by me and the yard isn't fenced. I'm going to clone that out once I get PS put back on my computer. At least the grass looks nice and green from all of the rain that we've had. :D

Welcome!

Cute pup, I like 1 and 4.
2,3 & 5 are cropped too tight, you cut off the top of his head and his tongue. The grass on his tongue in 2 & 5 are a bit distracting.

He looks very photogenic. #1 is definitely my favorite.

Thanks for the critiques! The grass on his tongue is actually my favorite part. lol The shot was totally accidental (hence the cropped off head/tongue). I just really liked the grass on his tongue. =)

I assume you cranked up the saturation slider. You need to seperate the channels and only saturate certain color. for example on this I would have increased the green quite a bit, orange and yellow only tiny bit.

It's actually only +1 to the right of center. My dog is an orangey-reddish color already.

+1 to the right doesnt mean anything to me if I dont know the scale. All im saying is your photo is oversaturated.

Question, though...should I have turned down the saturation so that the picture didn't look true to what I was seeing outside? It was extremely sunny...my dog is already orange-y...and the grass is super green because of all of the rain that we've had, so it really was that bright outside.

Also, how do I go about separating channels and only increasing saturation on certain colors?? I have a Nikon D3000.

You have to use a software to do that like photoshop or lightroom. The software that came with your camera might be able to do that. If the grass is already THAT green and your dog is already THAT orange, then you shouldnt mess with the saturation then.

For comparison, here are a couple that I took without turning the saturation up at all.

Yes...should I be shooting in RAW even if I don't have any PP software on my computer right now??
