I actually have that same one, and it's surprisingly good given how inexpensive it is. It is very good good for macro work, but is also handy as a diffused fill light for certain portrait situations and offers manual control down to 1/1024. If your friend doesn't already have a regular speedlight, this might not be my first choice, but it is a good choice.
