MOONING NAPTIME. The epic saga of a man and his quest to become a photographer

you guys are going to make sugarbritches jealous if you keep carrying on like this.

She's probably out trying to best my moon shot, as we speak.

Well, you would love it if she "mooned" you! lol!

I'm sure I won't get that exposure. lol

Seriously though, to get that exposure on the moon and the clouds, I used a trick.
I'm surprised no one has noticed it.
You cannot expose for the moon and get the clouds, and you cannot expose for the clouds without over exposing the moon.
It's not photoshopped either.

so tell us already! :)

I'm not telling just yet.

This will give you an idea of what I was up against.
Notice the moon and how over exposed it is. But look..............clouds.

And here is the moon properly exposed.
Ut oh..........the clouds are gone. But they really weren't.
That's why the shot I posted at the beginning of this page was so time consuming.
I had to ........well.........I'm not even giving hints.
lol

put the camera on bulb mode
opened the shutter, captured the moon.
covered the lens with black cloth.
paitiently waited for the clouds to get how & where you wanted
then uncovered the lens?

or, double exposure.

first the moon. later the clouds?

Love the photograph.
Multiple exposures and maybe some light painting of the clouds with a halogen spotlight??

Single exposure.
No bulb mode.
Not hdr.
I didn't use a spotlight either.

Thanks dave. Appreciate it.

Perhaps you made your own graduated ND filter. Maybe a dab of black marker on a UV filter, just enough to block the moon's light a bit?

Close but no cigar.
No filters were used. Other than a UV. No marks were put on the UV.

The suspense is killing me. :(

Oh I know!
You have one helluva big-ass flashgun to expose the clouds!

I'm right, right? :D:D

How about you spot metered not on the moon and not on the clouds but somewhere in-between. That's how I would go about it....but I don't shoot the moon, though..

Or waited until some of the clouds were blocking the moon, making it less bright, but still bright enough to shine through.
