Hi all,

I had a reason to look through my photographs today and seeing as I've been meaning to post this one for a while. I took this a few years back on my way up North to work, and at the time I was just shooting pretty wildly but lucked out on this shot. Its pretty much the reason I'm interested in photography today and I consider it the best picture I have ever taken so far.

Yep, you've got reason to be proud of that one. Sharp, well exposed, good DOF in the right places, good placement in the frame, interesting subject. I'd be very happy if I had shot that.

Great shot! I, too, feel that my interest in photography has peaked because of some random photo I took a while ago! It's a moment where you're like, "Hey, I'm not too bad at this!" I might give it a go for a bit and see what happens...and then you're hooked.

Great shot! I hope you'll overcome yourself in future :)

Thanks guys.

I knew when I took this shot it was a good un. At the moment its hanging on my wall on an A3 sized canvas. Its a good reminder to me that good shots are there and you just need to find them. I've not quite managed to get another one I'm this happy with but I'm still stoked I got it and it spurs me on to improve.

What makes this shot interesting to me (apart from what has been already mentioned) are the contrast and the background. The subject is well separated from the background not just by correct DoF but by the ( lucky) fact that dark parts of the deer are on a light background and light parts contrasts with darker background. So the deer stands out nicely. Contrast is a fundamental component that draws out attention to any picture. And the background itself here is interesting but not distracting due to the good matching colors. You should not be carried away, because by the end of the day it I'd just a lucky shot. But the important thing is to analyse it, realize why it is so good and then you can do it again.
