My first Event

I'm not ripping him off. I do most of my photography for FREE. Especially if I ask you, I've been practicing on my own for a few months and putting Pics on my FB page of what I can do. If you ask me to take pictures of you I will charge you for my effort. It's the same as going to a big name studio and having a newbie take your pictures. Your not going to say he's ripping you off are you? I know my friends and family CC is different from a train vet. But everyone has to start somewhere. I'll post a few pics of when I'm done with the event for CC.

Hello!
My name is Sojata and around June I decided that I wanted to do photography. Preferably high fashion shoots. I purchased a Canon Rebel XS Kit. I absolutely know nothing about photography or DSLR. I just point, shoot and I feel I take pretty decent photos

The above quote is exactly why you shouldn't be charging "I just point, shoot and feel I take pretty decent photos".
I'm not trying to discourage you but just because you need money for your hobby doesn't mean you should be charging people. Having a DSLR does not make you a better photographer especially if you are using it as a big point and shoot.

Most photographers will do photoshoots for FREE to build their portfolio and gain experience. And you can say no instead of charging people. You need practice so why not do it for free.

I'm not trying to be a b**** but I wouldn't charge to take a few pictures at a baby shower especially when I need all the experience I can get.

A baby shower is not an 'Event'. It's a small, personal, party. 99% of the people there will be older ladies.. all of which will have their own cameras. Their pics will probably be better than yours. Why would they want to give you money for the same pictures they just took for themselves?

As Mike said, give your cousin a CD and use this as a learning opportunity.

You must not know to many asian people.....lol.

I agree with everything else you said though!

Whelp I'm charging. To get better, funds are needed. Thanks for the CC. So far the people I have worked with for free or charged has been happy with my work so far.
I consider any type of party, show, wedding a event. That's how there labeled in my hard drive.

Funds aren't needed to get better, practice is. Of course the people you've worked with have been happy. Most people are happy with pictures they are emotionally attached it even if they are crap(not saying yours are crap).

To charge or not to charge - I don't care what you do but I wouldn't feel right charging people money when I have little to no experience. Just because you can charge doesn't mean you should.

Oh yes, I practice with what I have. But funds are essential. You can not just get by and learn everything off one lens. I would like the canon 50mm f/1.8 lens and a flash. That requires money. Think of it as a investment. By supporting me and throwing me a couple dollars to help with my photography education, in the long run will help me and my clients later in life when maybe they'll need me again, and hopefully by that time I'll be superb. I rarely ask people to pay, if they offer it. I will accept it.

Why can't you learn off one lens? Yes its always nice to have a fast lens but your kit can do everything. I think learning about exposure, metering, and how to shoot in manual/aperture priority/shutter priority is more important than having a new lens. Just my opinion. Thats all I'm getting at - you can learn your craft without money - you already have a camera and a lens. Learn how to use it to its full ability before you start charging people. Putting your camera on portrait mode is not using it to its full ability - most point and shoot cameras have that same option.

And in the long run when your "clients" need you again, they are going to only want to pay 40.00 because thats what you charged them before.

My cousin asked me to take pictures at his girlfriends baby shower this weekend. I'm excited and I wanna do a good job. Any tips from the Vets? I want to set up a place to take pictures, I was thinking wall paper and balloons. I also bought the canon selphy printer and plan to bring that with me and sell prints at $2.

IMO it is tacky as hell to charge your cousins guests (who have already shelled out $$$ for a shower gift) for photos. Just my opinion.

This is how we do things. I done paid $20 to get into a club and paid $5 a picture just for the memory. Things are different everywhere. But this is what sells and works in my city.

I think he was getting at - its family. Your cousin is getting gifts from people then your going to try and charge them more money for pictures.

I don't discriminate. I'm a business major so Im looking at everything as a profit. I don't know what baby showers everyone been to or what they was like. I'm not forcing people to buy them. I want to set up something like a photobooth. You come take pictures with the mother to be, by yourself or etc. In a area where I set up. If you want a copy it's $2. If I make enough I'll even give some of the money to my cousin. Just like the raffle I see at every baby shower I been to. $1 for 1 ticket $5 for a arm length.

I'm guessing you have never been to a Baby Shower. Other than the person that is prego......no one cares about pictures...lol I would never go to a baby shower and buy a picture for $2. Why...... because the day isn't important to me and there will be plenty of free photos on FB the hour after we leave!! If you charge you look like an ass.....just sayin

Why did you ask for advice? You shot down pretty much everything that was offered.

I asked for advice and didn't get far. To sum it all up "no one thinks I should be charging and as I stated he insisted" one thing I asked was how many prints should I give for $40 I was thinking 40 for $40. If I shot down everything someone told me, Then y'all never even answered any of my questions.
I'm African American and humans are vain here. No one cares it's her baby shower. The people just want to be seen, heard, and talked bout.
