Need advice on 5D Mark II

If you are shoot portraits in a studio I wouldn't use an on camera flash. You could pick up a couple of YN-460ii's (they have a slave option so you can trigger them via other flashes) they are really cheap and quite reliable for the price. As far as the 24-105 lens, I know nothing about it but I know that if you are going to use it at the widest end your portraits are going to be distorted, I wouldn't shoot any wider then 50mm.

It's not bad if you can control your scene. I use the 17-40 for certain portraits, but I make sure I'm not right up in the subject's grill unless I'm absolutely trying to get distored features and apendages.

Don't take this wrong as I am just trying to be honest but if you are asking some of these questions do you think you need a 5D II? That is a big expense and jumping from a rebel is a big step. Why not get a original 5D or a 50D or 60D and get some good glass and lights with the extra $2k?

It's the OP's money, let them spend it however they want.

For Iron: I just love portraits - people, kids, pets. but children portraits by far my passion of catching there random moments, especially of my own child! and then landscapes/wildlife/nature is my second passion.

I understand why spend the money if I'm not a professional *already* and don't already own a big money camera... I get it, totally and I can see why some are not willing to give out there experiences. But as I said in the other post, everyone starts somewhere. Not only am I asking others for there experience/advice/opinion, I'm doing research and reading upon camera, flashes, etc.. so I believe I'm doing the "right" thing before jumping into buying a camera or anything else. But then again, I wasn't born as a professional already so what do I know still learning everyday!

The 5D MK II is a great body, in fact I have 2, I also have APC bodies including a 50D and an old XTI that I still use.
A 5D MKII and a 24-105 is a great combo for many subjects.

Any one of the Canon Speedlite flashes will work great for portraits with that lens.

The lens is a good lens. Not super fast, but a good one nonetheless. Regarding a flash: I would go with a 580 EX II. Unless you want to spend the extra $ and go with a Q flash trio. Depending on how far you want to go with your photography, the Q flash is, by far, a better flash. But, they are pricey. You probably would be better off buying a 580 EX II and a couple of Pocket Wizards. You'll have about $800 all together, however, you'll be able to get the flash off of the camera.

As to the 5D MKII: From a owner of 3 of them, they are hands down the best DSLR on the market for the $. Not speed demons, in terms of fps, but still fast enough for most sports (if you're into that type of photography). The ISO 50, IMO, is a marketing gimmick. Rarely, for anything other than sports, do we stray from ISO 200.
