New from Texas

Hey, I have always been interested in photography, but finally going to get into it more. I currently have a junk camera but almost ready to buy new stuff. I work on a boat for 20 days and home for 10, so while on watch and nothing to do, I'm on the net quite a lot. I'm interested in some portraiture, b&w, glamor, and macro. I have done some nature stuff also. I know enough to most times get confused. I feel I have a good sense of composition and have a little clue about lighting. I edit most of my photos but don't have the glorious (choir singing) Photo Shop. What I will need help on is the f stop/ASA stuff, since most of what I have done is point and shoot with the camera on auto pilot. I'm looking at DSLR for the wide range of pics I want to try.
Married, 2 kids -16 and 20, with 2 lazy dogs.
Probably more than everyone wants to know but...
