New lens/Headshots C&C needed!

I just bought my 50mm f/1.8 lens and I HAD to play around with it wide open. So I grabbed a couple friends to practice headshots on and went to a park! My computer won't turn on so I had to go to my friend's house to edit. However, his screen is not calibrated and when I looked at them on my iPad and iPhone every single device showed them as drastically different colors!
Okay, rip them to pieces!

C&C per req:

1. A bit too much of the 'football shoulders'; he should have been turned just a bit and straightened up. Exposure isn't bad, but it's a bit flat; a fill light camera left would have really helped.


2. The tighter crop makes a lot of the posing issue in #1 go away, but his expression is still, 'Are we done yet????'

3. Very nice, however I wish you'd chosen a different background; the 'three layer' look is a little distracting, but not bad.

4. Head turned just a little too far here; try and avoid pusing the iris right to one side of the socket.

5. Starting to develop a little bit of 'racoon eye' here; again a fill light would have really helped things pop. Don't forget to tell people to smile!

6. If you're going to shoot from below, have the client angle their chin down slightly to avoid the 'up the nose' view.

Overall, not bad; you've nailed focus, and got some nice images. A few minor areas to work on, but nothing significant.

Also, are you supposed to crop actor headshots to 8x10?

Crop them to whatever is required by the client for their purposes. If they're being included in a print portfolio, then yes, 8x10 is a fairly standard srop.

they all have this strange pastel pinkish blue flow and the lighting is very flat.

Haha, yeah. Fun times were had but apparently didnt show in any of the pictures I posted. Yeah, none of them like showing teeth. Do y'all have any tricks to get that out of people?

@The_Traveler I'm guessing that it is their skin tone and then the blue coming from the white reflector and me trying to adjust on a really bad monitor. But I could be wrong.

They all have dark eye sockets (raccoon eyes).

In the facial mask, the eyes are the most important element to nail the exposure of.

If the sclera are gray and not white, the eyes are under exposed. (Or the teeth - like in post #3)

Getting sufficient light into the eye sockets also aids nailing the exposure of the other facial mask highlights on the cheeks. end of nose, forehead, and chin.

@LShooter I completely agree. My computer is fixed now so I got to look at them on a good monitor and I immediately boosted all of the highlights/a little fill.

Yes, the first shot is bluish ... definitely. Also agree they are a tad underexposed, but it looks to be correctable in pp.

I am impressed with the 50mm 1.8. The backgrounds are really creamy and nice while the sharpness is still pretty good. Looks like it'll be a nice lens. Congrats on it.

Be careful not to crop in too tight. Leave a bit of space in the framing for overhang from an actual picture frame. #3 has great spacing. Really nice lighting on all though.
