This is my first post in this forum, and these are some of my first images ever taken on a proper camera. I'm really hoping to be ripped apart, I really want to get better at photography as it is only a newfound passion.

Roughly in order of being taken, I think only the last one has decent (for a complete beginner) composition.

At this stage I was trying to get the whole subject in the shot. Way too much background which distracts from the actual subject of the shot.

Basically the same story here, both were taken within very quick succession of one another.

It finally occurred to me that cropping in close to the face wasn't necessarily a crime. This is the only one I'm really happy with after taking aboard some feedback from the last two images.

I'd really appreciate C&C, I've really fallen in love with photography, it would be great to at least be okay at it myself.

Welcome to the forum!
C&C per req:

1. Nice shot; good focus. The background in this image isn't actually all that bad. It's softly focused and even enough that it doesn't really grab the eye. The composition is a little tight however; you've got lots of empty space image left, and the pup is crowded on the right side. I would like to see him positioned such that he (she?) was going into the image rather that right at the edge. Try and avoid cropping little bits such as his left forepaw. Good job getting on his level, but it would be nice to have a little fill light to bring some life into his eyes and detail to his nose.

2. This is a well timed shot, but the background here really kills it. Still, it's a good exposure, which can be a challenge when dealing with so much white.

3. This is a good shot, but I wish his paw centre foreground was somewhere else. It shows as a large, white bump in the middle of his face. I think if you'd moved a bit further camera left it would have been even stronger.

Overall, they're a very good set for someone so new to photography. The exposures are good, the points of focus are good, and the compositions aren't bad. Keep practicing and keep posting. Looking forward to seeing more.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

something like this on #1? :) I tried to fix the paw too.. it was a quickie.. but not too bad, I think.

1: what tirediron said.

2: I would have to disagree on this one. I like it. I think the background adds to the story. Lazy dog on a lazy day kind of thing. There's nothing too distracting about an out of focus empty chair. You're cropped in a little tight, but I still like the shot.

3: I like the way the dog's eyes look, but it's cropped in too close for my liking and the hair in his eyes is quite distracting.

Thank you for all the responses, I can definitely see where you are coming from and I'll try to build on the advice you've given me.

I just remembered one more shot I had, not taking on board your criticism because, well, you hadn't given it yet.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get in some shots and see if I can turn up with something better.

the dof in all the pics a bit too shallow ans makes some part of the puppy too blurry and seems a big distraction to me. 1 would have been a good one if his (her?) face was sharp instead of the grass.

"Monday Morning" is such a good photo in my humblest of opinions. That title really goes with it. I feel its pain. Thanks for sharing this with us. Keep up the good work.

#1 is my fave... I like the soft blue quality that seems to match the playful mood of the moment. You're doing well for a beginner. Keep at it!

I would love to shoot your white dog on a black background with 2 studio lights and a reflector
The 3rd of the first set is best but i would have used a smaller aperture for a better DOF
