New Photographer: Critiques needed!!!

Hello PhotoForum!

I'm a noob... and I apologize ahead of time if I make a mistake with anything. I've been into hobby photography for a while, trying to understand my camera and what not. I recently started getting a bit more serious and doing shoots for friends. It's a tad bit cold outside, so we stuck with an inside studio. I'm working with three flashes (Canon 430exii and 2 Yonguo YN560's), which I love trying to control the light, but it's so hard! A Canon T3i, with kit lens and Canon 50mm. I am really into creative shots, but always some sort of portrait.

I was hoping you guys could help critique my work. I don't mind heavy criticism as long as it is in good taste! Some issues I'm concerned about...

- Clarity, I feel like my photos aren't as focused as I would like to be.
- Color, I know in a few my white balance was off. I mostly just let the camera do it's work.
- Post processing, can you see anything that could be added in the post-processing to add anything.
- Angles, I mostly shoot from the front, but am working on moving around a bit more!

I like the photos. It's a bit hard to get critiques on most forums if you don't post your photos inline in the thread. Too hard to open a new window and look at each picture, then come back and write a comment. I forget what I was going to say. If I were you I would repost this or at least add the pictures to the post with numbers so folks can critique easily.

Use one of the forums in the - Photo Galleries - Photos submitted by members for general display or critique - section of TPF if you want C&C improvement tips on some of the photos you have taken.

I agree with this. You are doing "okay". Your pics seem to demonstrate at least some visual sophistication, although the shot of the little boy is pretty bland. I would simply suggest working at it...get some decent and easy-to-use software like Lightroom 4, and learn how to adjust white balance, do straightening and cropping, and how to adjust selected areas of the images using masks and brushes. As far as white balance...there is no one,single WB setting that is "right"...it's a "feel" sort of thing, plus WB interacts also with exposure and tint and curves and a host of other factors.

Keep shooting, and you will continue to improve. Already you show some signs of life!!!
