New to photography please help!

Hey all! I am new to photography and would love some constructive criticism on my photo and some advice on editing to get rid of the veins with photoshop CS6. Thanks!!

I would start with the white balance. also looks a little too cool for me. and a bit overexposed.
cant help with the veins though. just a part of infant photography.

kissarose; I think you should keep trying.

I agree that it is normal to see the veins, and if you start cloning them out, you're going to mess up the hair.

Good focus on the near eye, fairly good light, the frame is a little tight, and if you could get the infant to look at the camera, it might be better.

Pixmedic is right about too cool. You have your edit flag set to NOT OK to edit. Change that and I'll be happy to show you how to correct the photo.

You can remove the veins with the spot healing brush pretty easily, and without messing up the hair. Just use a soft brush that's just large enough to cover the width of the veins, and paint them out. Do it on a separate layer so that you can easily redo any that don't "heal" quite right.

Thanks everyone for the advice! So I did some playing around. I am not sure how to change my settings so others can edit, but is this somewhat better?

I just got my camera and photoshop so I am just playing around while I learn about everything. And love advice on how I can improve!!

There is tool in Photoshop Elements called "spot healing brush" and I could see it work just fine on these minor veins you're referring to. I'm not sure if you have the same tool but if you do, you should definitely give it a go.

That's better; you headed in the right direction.

From the Image/Mode menu in Photoshop select Lab Color. From the Image/Adjustments menu select Levels. In the drop box labeled Channels select "b." The value of the midpoint slider defaults to 1.00. Raise it to about 1.20. Then select Channel "a." Raise the midpoint there as well but much less -- 1.03 or 4. Select the Lightness channel and move the white endpoint slider to the left to meet the end of the histogram graph, stay just off the end. Then set the value of the midpoint slider less than 1.00 to suit your preference.
