New to the site!

Just wanted to take a minute and say Hi! I am new to this site and also new to photography! I am getting ready to start classes this summer and I am super excited! I am trying to learn MY camera before I get started. I have a Nikon D3100. I am looking to get a new lens to get started rather than the one that comes with my camera, but I am not sure which one would best suit me. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am probably going to do more portrait photography and then venture into some sports photography as well. Thank you in advance!

Get a 35mm 1.8g or a 50mm 1.8g. I had the 35 and traded it for the 50 because iI like being a little further back when i take photos. Both lenses are great in image quality and you will enjoy either one! This is a shot with my 50!
