Newbie... how am I doing?

Please tell me what I am doing well and what needs work (and maybe how to do that!)The first picture is by a lake on a very sunny day. How do I get rid of the shadows?
The 2nd picture is by a little creek at a local park. How do I make the background blurrier? I was using the 50mm lens...

the photos are a bit small. Try uploading them to Flickr and then post them on here. There is a tutorial 4 posts down from the top of this forum that explains posting pictures. Good luck, keep shooting!

Not to be rude, but that's not the best approach to have on this particular forum. There are folks on here who will gladly critique your photos for you and help you figure out what to research, but there's almost nobody here who is going to hand-hold you through the entire learning experience. There are several examples just within the first few pages of the beginners' forum that demonstrates that, where people ask questions that they easily could have googled, and they generally aren't received well.

I guess all I'm saying is, we're here to help, but you really need to take the bulk of the responsibility for learning on yourself - don't expect it to be handed to you.

And I just put that a whole lot nicer than you'll get it from other folks around here.
