Night Portrait

i don't at all class myself at been any good at portrait shooting so when ever an opportunity comes along i jump for it, so this was just some practice and would love any input tips etc

Very nice light here. I like her expression as well. My only thought is that I think it would have been stronger had you shot from a lower position; more at her eye level.

Eye level interesting, that's definitely something ill try, i have a shoot coming up in two weeks time ill use that recommendation cheers

In general, looking down on the subject places them in a subordinate position, looking up a subject places them in a superior position (often used for business portraits of leaders, CEOs, etc) and eye-level is "neutral".

But it can also contribute to a feel of vulnerability, which in this case IMO works well with the image. My only negative with an otherwise great portrait is the sharp dark shadow line on the shoulder from the collar, and the dark shadow spot on the neck.

But you don't want to look up their nose.

I have several weak points in photography, and I know portraiture is my weakest. Still, I know a nice one when I see it, and yours meets my standard for good.

This. The look on her face, the jacket in disarray, and the way she leans on whatever that is makes me feel like she's slightly concerned, the slightly above eye level shot adds to it. I like it a lot.
