Hi everyone,

I'm going to be getting a Nikon D7000 most likely to replace my oly e-620, but I don't really like its 18-105mm kit lens. I think i'll be getting a 50mm prime and the 105mm micro for starts, then see what happens later for other lenses.

How is the 105mm micro? From what i read and heard, it'd be a really good all around lens for its fast aperture/reach etc. Should I be concerned about the focus breathing at 1:1?

thanks

There are quite a few threads discussing the various merits of many different macro lenses. A search will turn these up for you. I would also suggest reading reviews of the lens on the various review sites that exist.. they will have the detail to backup the pro's and con's they list... here you will only get opinions. The consensus on the Nikkor 105 micro is that it is an excellent lens.. sharp and crisp.. as are many others.

a few I found in a 5 second search...

Do not listen to Ken Rockwell. I have had mine for some time now and have not noticed this at all.

I would not call it an all around lens, especially on a DX body. You will find it very tight in many situations. It is a great lens though, one of my favorites. If you want a more "walk around" type lens, I would look into the 17-55 2.8- same price range.

It does breath, but it's not that hard to compensate.

And i have the older D lens, but it is a beautifully sharp lens.

The 105 really is an excellent lens! So is the 85mm DX.. as is the Tokina 100 2.8. A lot of people like the Tamron 90 and 180 also. The Sigma 150 and older 180 are well thought of! Almost all of the prime macro lenses available today are awesome.... they all have their pros and cons... but they will all give great images once you learn to use them!
