Nikon 50mm f/1.8D (Nikon d60)

I would like to buy the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lense for street photography . Mostly i want to shoot at night.What do you think about this lense and the change of the field of view.Thanks.

are you using it on a DX or FX body? it should be alright if you're using it on an FX body, as the perspective you get is roughly equal to what you see with the naked eye, however if you're using it on a DX body, i think it would be too telephoto (zoomed in, tight) for street photography

I own a Nikon d60. By the change of the field of view i mean what you said ,the fact that the lense would become telephoto.So what you are saying this lense is not for me , do you have any suggestions.Thanks (i am not willing to pay more than 250 euros) thank you for your reply

It is a 50mm lens. If you have a lens that has 50mm focal length (like the kit lens that shipped with most cameras), you can turn the zoom ring to 50mm and see how it looks like as far as angle of view goes.

Just a big word of WARNING here----

The 50 1.8D will NOT AUTOFOCUS on a D60, I hope you are aware of this!

In my mind though, you do not want a 50 1.8D anyway, the released 50 1.8G is a superior lens and not much more expensive and this lens will AF on your D60.

Its becomes 'in effect' a 75mm equiv lens, which means it becomes a short telephoto lens.

When a 50mm (FX) lens is used on a DX (cropped) body, it is still a 50mm lens. It just that the cropped sensor only capture the center region of the image circle projected by the lens while a full frame or 35mm film recording medium can cover more area (being larger).

What you will see is the Field of View (FoV) is different from when the lens is mounted on a full frame (FF) or 35mm film camera. It is roughly about the same as a 75mm lens mounted on a FF /35mm film camera.

However, if you never use a FF or 35mm film camera, it means nothing to you. Just take a peek on the viewfinder and that is all you need.


It is like when you ask someone how is snake meat taste like, and the response is "It taste like chicken". If you have not eat chicken before, it really means nothing to you.

oh yes, i forgot to mention that it wont autofocus on that body. hmm.... i would suggest something wider, perhaps a 28 or 35mm? personally, i would favour a zoom,but it really depends on how much money you have to spend on it

He means look at your 18-55 lens. Set it to 50mm and look through the viewfinder. That's what a 50mm lens will look like.

I think it's great for street. That way your not in anybody's face. Great low light performance too. 1.8G of course.

Yes, the field of view of the lens set at 50mm focal length, regardless whether it is a Nikon DX or FX, should look some what the same. They will not be exactly the same because it varies from lens to lens or model to model.

A member here took a photo with a Canon 24-70mm (full frame lens) lens at 70mm, and another photo of the same scene with Canon 70-200mm (full frame lens) lens at 70mm. The field of view of both photos look a little different. But you get the idea.
