When I use the pop-up flash with my D3000 and 18-55mm lens in conjuction with the lens hood I get a black circular image at the bottom of the photograph if the lens is set betwen 18mm and 24mm. If I remove the lens hood everything is fine.

Is it normal for the lens hood to interfere when a wide angle setting is used?

what lens hood are you using? is this a screw in hood or is this an actual nikon hood? the d3000 comes with a kit 18-55 lens but no lens hood. Also basically al that i going the hood is casting a shadow, i have a feeling its not a nikon hood.

Yes. It's a shadow cast by the lens hood, even the Nikon lens hood.

The issue is mentioned in the D3000 user's manual. The completre user's manual is on one of the discs that came with the camera.
