Nikon Product Announcement Timeline - Charts

Interesting to look at if you haven't seen it already.

Has the timeline of all the products launched by Nikon with a few predicitions for the rest of 2010 and 2011.
2010 has only 2 dslr launches till now, which is the lowest number since 2004.
2010 also has 9 lens launches which seems to be the highest number of lenses launched in a single year. (according to Hogan)

Do you expect any more dslr or lens launches from Nikon for 2010? (fx-dx)
And what would you predict for 2011?

Interesting but food for product theorists nothing more. Looking at the results you can see some obvious standouts. Such as the D900. You can't from one previous data point determine the product release cycle. We may get a D700xs for all we know. Also what's with the megapixel count. It also doesn't make sense in the timeline nor compared with other products around it. Come to think of it why D900 rather than D800?

Given that it's been Nikon's lowest DSLR announcements, and highest lens announcements what are my predictions?

Next year the trend will continue, and more lenses and less cameras will come out.
Or equally likely the trend will reverse back to what it was and more cameras and less lenses will come out.

The problem here is trying to draw conclusions from outlying data points. The reality is without inside information the next year is officially a blank slate since we don't know if Nikon's current progression is sustainable or an outlying artifact.

Like i said its inetersting to look at, and like you said its food for the product theorists.

Would they have very very huge losses if they announced most(not all.. just most.) of their 2011 products for instance?
Wouldnt that be considered good customer service? perhaps people would choose to go with Nikon just for that fact instead of going for a rival company.

I can understand the secrecy from a business perspective, but i still wonder if it could somehow be beneficial for them.
I think there is a trend that has been going on for a while and needs to be broken.
There doesn't seem to be enough creativity in my opionon.

I'm sure Nokia was just laughing out loud when Apple announced they would be entering into the mobile phone market. But who's laughing now?
What if Apple decided to start producing cameras?
Maybe then they would be forced to make some significant improvements.

I hope they start thinking out of the box and at least put out 1 niche product per year.

If Apple started producing cameras, oh dear god. That should be a whole new subject matter.

Consider who put together that product chart...one of the world's foremost Nikon experts. A guy Nikon hired to speak in mid-2010 to its executives in a lecture about camera design possibilities. A guy with thousands of contacts in the camera/photographic world. A guy who has written something like 19 Nikon guide books. Then consider who dismisses the chart as nonsense. Or not.

Interesting to see that both canon and nikon are upgrading their lens ranges in a big way - not sure about nikons future plans but canon have said 10 or so new/upgraded lenses per year till their EF line is fully upgraded is their current intent.
