Okay, So I now have an SB900 flash and i want to go off camera with it to give myself more options then just sitting on top of the camera. I looked at some of the pcb (paul buff) triggers but wasn't sure what would work best with my setup. it would be nice if i can still adjust flash setting from the camera (not even sure if that is available) and wasnt sure if there was a better option out there then those without breaking the bank. i prefer to use quality stuff. but at the same time its just a hobby and don't want to nessicarily break the bank. id like something with the option to branch out in case i decide to move into a multiple light setup down the path. any help on brands that would fit into that category or even just brands to outright avoid. would be appreciated.

I use cowboy studio trigger. No problemo! It is cheap too. Planning to buy more receiver so I can have several triggered.

I second that, I have never had any problems with them.

I have the yongnuo CTR-301P triggers off of ebay, and they work good. But they don't allow you to control flash power from the camera, and you have to shoot with your flash in manual mode.

If you want to maintain TTL flash metering and be able to adjust power output from the camera then you need a Nikon SU-800 commander (but you'll be limited to keeping the flash in sight of the commander), or a set of the new pocket wizards (Flex TT5 model I think, but I'm not sure. Anyone able to confirm the model?) Also, the radio poppers PX triggers work too.

Yep. Dustin nailed it.

You could also upgrade to Nikon camera body that has CLS - Commander mode.

Other then the new Pocket Wizard tools, the SU-800 or a body upgrade are the only ways to use all the bells and whistles in the SB-0900 you paid for.

The SB-900 does have SU-4 mode which would utilize the flash of light from your D3000 popup flahs unit to trigger the SB-900, but no TTL. (refer to your SB-900 users manual)

yeah for the time being i'm going to stick with the D3000 with all of my expensive hobbies the wife would kill me if i upgraded camera bodies right now. and just want to make sure that anything i do buy now can work great when i do upgrade. i'll look into the pocket wizards and su-800 and problaby come up with a few more questions.

thanks for the heads up on the pop up flash Kmh i had thought I could do that and tried it, I must have had it on a diffrent setting. i'll have to go thru the manul again.
