As follow-up to my favorite lens thread I tried some tubes on my Helios 44-2. These were shot using a tripod & focusing rails & cable release to minimize any camera shake.


1. No tubes, close focus.

2. With an 11mm tube

3. With 11mm + 20mm tubes (31mm)

Wowa I have to say I really like how this has come out!
The results from the lens are indeed most impressive - I'd be interested to know how it does in other lighting situations, just outside of this well lit flower, but already I find myself really liking its rendering, contrast and overall the texture its showing on those flowers.

Love these! Beautiful focus and colors... i just don't like the composition. They could be cropped better. Question for you... what are tubes, focusing rails and helios 44-2?

Question for you... what are tubes, focusing rails and helios 44-2?

Focusing rails allow precise movement of the camera in & out from the subject as well as lateral movement. I use the rails to focus in macro work. Here you see the rails mounted on a tripod & my cable release hanging.

Extension tubes move the lens away from the camera for greater magnification. A Helios 44-2 is a lens made in the former Soviet Union with a 58mm FL & f2 max aperture. Here you see a set of tubes & the lens.

I have a helios 44-2 and i ordered macro tubes, after seeing this thread i can't wait to get them! Do you know what the magnification of that third shot on the flower is?

If one were to have 58mm of tubes on a 58mm lens that would yield a 1:1 macro. Since I had 31mm of tubes, about half FL, the ratio would be a bit better than 1:2.

Actually, they just walked into frame as I was trying this lens for the first time on my homemade adapter for infinity focus. I now see the white balance was off on the cool side.
