One day I'll train my camera to behave like I want it to - or I'll go crazy and start only shooting studio :p

Could you have got a little farther "forward" so as have a slightly more 3/4 view? I think it would be interesting to try some panning with these guys too.
 
Maybe - the problem is my old curse that I like filling the frame so if I want more up front I also lose more top and bottom (I need a longer "landscape" sensor :p). For these two I was at 80mm so I did have some room to pull back; though in both cases there was a bar/rope so I couldn't walk back too far.

Panning and blur is something I've seen a lot of - I've not tried it and with animals I've never "loved" that look. Cars and propellers on aircraft I love it - legs and animals eh its just not my thing.
