Looked over the back fence yesterday morning while bringing in firewood to see a Great Blue Heron standing atop a telephone pole, grabbed camera, coffee and chair and settled in with hopes of getting a few shots when it took flight. After five hours of waiting I gave up, the bird didn't leave until it was nearly dark. I did how ever get a few shots I like of the heron and a group of California Condors as they drifted by overhead (300mm just doesn't cut it for these high flying birds).

I'm not sure what the bird is doing in this shot, it's mouth is open and it's throat was warbling but there was no sound I could discern.

He gave some good poses for you.

These are, unfortunately, just memory shots with no real beauty or interest to others, I'm afraid.

The first two are oversharpened enough to have very obvious halos.

Thanks Lew,

Knowing what to look for when sharpening images will help.

This is a bit underexposed, expose to make certain that the important parts get enough light.
The sky has nothing so additional exposure won't hurt anything.

Sharpening is as much an art as a science

Sharpening 101 is a decent start.

Then Sharpening in Photoshop -- Part I

Thanks for the links, went back and reduced the sharpness on those two.
