What's new

Pastels and Watercolors (and a few other art media)

This is a fairly recent abstract I did with acrylics. A small 6x8" leftover canvas I had that I painted over. Playing with texture and I have some scrape-y thing I used in the corner. Also did a quick image transfer with clear Contact paper of a hand diagram. No real reason, just playing.

I like it.

I love the blues with that coppery color, I’ve been working on something with similar colors in inks. The textures really make the colors pop.

We’re covering abstracts this week and next in art class. I’m curious to see how this can be taught as it seems more like something that has to be instinctual.

I remember an assignment where we were given single words and hads to paint what we thought or felt with those words. Thinks like bump or bang, pain, dark, light. We just rolled with it.

I remember painting lighting bolts for a couple of them, probably bang and pain.

Abstracts to me are difficult, since I seem inclined to have a main subject, probably because of photography. We point our cameras at objects and it's hard to look at a canvas or art paper and just throw paint.

This was also an experiment with this particular palette, too. I like it!

Will be interested in hearing about it. A lot of abstracts can be really striking, but I'm durned if I get how to start one.

I bought myself an early retirement gift. Now I need to get the other part of it.

Airbrush - mini DIY spray paint. Very fine lines up to about 1/4" wide. I ordered the compressor this morning.

Oh, wow - I had no idea you messed around with air brushing. (If you mentioned it before, I don't remember. :biggrinangelA:)

Well, you're acting like someone who has a workshop in their future! Fun stuff.

I've done a little bit on model kits but it was a cheap brush and I had a hard time making it work properly. This is a much better model. I've been wanting to get a decent one for some time, now.

Portraits this week. This is a sketch I did of Princess. The jawline needs work and the left eye seems a bit too high. The painting is almost done. Will work on it again this week in class.

Nice sketch! Were you using graphite or charcoal here?

Portraits - ugh. The only way I tackle a face is by using the old trick of a vertical line down the center and a horizontal line in the eye area. The eyes here look level to me.

Seems like you're still enjoying the class! Doing all kinds of things outside of your love of flowers. Good job! 👍

Awesome. It does look like her head is ever-so-slightly tilted to (her) right so that might make the left eye look higher. I am not very good at portraits, at all.

This week’s art class assignment was to copy one of the paintings in the gallery. I chose this landscape by Henry Newman. It’s called Gulf of Spezia. Still a WIP. The scale is a bit off.

I need to wash out the mountains a bit to mute them, add the details in some aread and add the trees. I’m happy with the clouds and the reflections/water. Will decide if the castle is done after I add the trees.
